Using non-native error patterns to improve pronunciation verification

چکیده
In this paper we show how a pronunciation quality measure can be improved by making use of information on frequent pronun ciation errors made by non-native speakers. We propose a new measure, called weighted Goodness of Pronunciation (wGOP), and compare it to the much used GOP measure. We applied this measure to the task of discriminating correctly from incor rectly realized Dutch vowels produced by non-native speakers and observed a substantial increase in performance when suffi cient training material is available.

Automatic pronunciation error detection in non-native speech: the case of vowel errors in Dutch.
This research is aimed at analyzing and improving automatic pronunciation error detection in a second language. Dutch vowels spoken by adult non-native learners of Dutch are used as a test case. A first study on Dutch pronunciation by L2 learners with different L1s revealed that vowel pronunciation errors are relatively frequent and often concern subtle acoustic differences between the realizat...
متن کاملNon-native Pronunciation Modeling in a Command & Control Recognition Task: A Comparison between Acoustic and Lexical Modeling
In order to improve automatic recognition of English commands spoken by non-native speakers, we have modeled non-native pronunciation variation of Dutch, French and Italian. The results of lexical and acoustical modeling appeared to be source language and speaker dependent. Lexical modeling only resulted in a substantial improvement (of 35%) for the French speakers. Acoustic model adaptation ha...
متن کاملTransfer Learning based Non-native Acoustic Modeling for Pronunciation Error Detection
The scarcity of large-scale non-native corpora and human annotations are two fundamental challenges in the development of computer-assisted pronunciation training (CAPT) systems. We explored several transfer learning based methods to detect the pronunciation errors without using nonnative training data. Effects were confirmed in the Mandarin Chinese pronunciation error detection of Japanese spe...
متن کاملA preliminary study on ASR-based detection of Chinese mispronunciation by Japanese learners
Detecting mispronunciations produced by non-native speakers and providing detailed instructive feedbacks are desired in computer assisted pronunciation training system (CAPT), as it is helpful to L2 learners to improve their pronunciation more effectively. In this paper, we present our preliminary study on detecting phonetic segmental mispronunciations on account of the erroneous articulation t...
متن کاملComputer Assisted Pronunciation Training
Computer Assisted Pronunciation Training systems have become popular tools to train on second languages. Many second language learners prefer to train on pronunciation in a stress free environment with no other listeners. There exists no such tool for training on pronunciation of the Norwegian language. Pronunciation exercises in training systems should be directed at important properties in th...
